Mary Myhre began her journey in the TRIO community in 1985 and worked for Centralia College’s Talent Search Program for 29 years, retiring in the summer of 2014. As a first generation and low-income student herself, she found passion in working for TRIO and supporting students from a similar background. During her time with Talent Search it is estimated that she worked with and helped change the lives of over 1,500 students in Lewis County. Mary dedicated her professional life to helping underserved students. Her efforts went above and beyond what was expected of her with working with her students. Most notably, Mary made sure her students had the transportation and necessary clothing/items to attend regional science summer programs in Alaska and Idaho. Many of these students would not have been able to attend these programs without her efforts. Mary deeply believed in TRIO and saw the power our programs have to change lives. This scholarship is dedicated to Mary and her legacy of enacting change through TRIO to better the lives of students in Washington state.

This scholarship will be awarded to one student from a pre-college AND college program from an “Active” TRIO program of WSTA. 

Requirements:

• Be either a high school senior, college student or graduate student. 
• Plan to continue your education during the fall of 2024 
• Demonstrate how TRIO has positively impacted your educational future 
• One letter of recommendation from TRIO advisor (within the last year)

Additional information:

• How were the scholarships named? Board/committee leads reached out to their networks in 2023 and were given the opportunity to submit a recommendation to submit a scholarship in someone’s honor. 

• How is the scholarship fund sustained? Part of the proceeds from the yearly Civic Leadership Conference (student conference) and the silent auction amount raised at the Professional Development conference go into the scholarship fund.
